Hi all, I've been daysailing with my 2 Kids and wife on our H23 but we'd like to do an overnighter with the Kid's. The H23 is great for 2 because you can reserve the forward bunk area for storage and Potty. With the kids however, we need the bunk area so what do you do about Head accomodations?? I've thought about putting a curtin in the cockpit and moving the port-a-potty out to make a latreen type arrangement. Any thoughts? As always, thanks for the discussion.. Chuck Michel Windsongs

How Old??

Chuck How old are the kids? I did a week on Lake Erie on our 23 with my 15 year old daughter and 12 year old son and we just worked around it. You always need to remember what if it starts to rain with the head in the cockpit. (wife will never let you forget she got soaked). The 23 is a great boat but it is still only a 23 so just work around it and have fun. Cliff

Family crusing the h23

Chuck, When my wife and I bought our h23 in 12/86, our only child (Kara) was 8 mo. old. We day sailed during our 1st summer, and started spending overnights during our 2d summer. BTW, its fairly easy to bungy-cord a travel crib into the cabin. There have been no problems regarding placement of the head. The key is that its not being used that much of the time. I assume that you have the plywood bottomed cushions to cover the portapotty and its foot well, so that the full V-berth is available for sleeping. For storage, remember that there is a fair amount of storage under the seating and the V-berth, in the quarter-berth, and in the cockpit lazerette locker. At bed time, if you are away from shore facilities, make sure everyone gets their turn before lights out. That will avoid most problems. Occassionally someone will need to use the head in the middle of the night. ITS OK. Move sleepers out of the V-berth temporarily, then restore order and get them back in bed. They'll fall asleep quickly, no big deal. We've discussed installing a privacy curtain at the bulkhead, but its never been a sufficient problem to get any priority. The longest time on the boat was a week cruising the San Juans in Washington when the kids were 6, 8 3/4 and 11 yrs old. Even with all the gear and supplies that required, no big deal. Just scoot things out of the way to use the head, then replace the cushions and resume your prior activities. Go ahead and start bringing the kids for overnights aboard. You'll find it easier than you think, and enjoyable too. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Possible option

Don't know if this is an option, but on our 240 when we overnight with the two kids we take the portapotty out from under the Vberth and leave it in front of the steps at the companionway at night. That way they can use it whenever they want. During the day we put it back under the Vberth.

Thanks for the responses:

Cliff, The boys are 6 and 3 so they don't take much room in the front bunk. Thanks for your thoughts, I feel more confident knowing that other sailors have solved these problems.. I'll Let you know how it works out this summer (The Kids want to search for pirate treasure!). /Chuck "Windsongs"

heads up ( and out)

Overnight often on our 23.5. If it is only my wife and myself, we simply put the head at the base of the companionway stairs. If a third party is aboard and we are anchored in a secluded spot, we put it up in the cockpit under the bimini. Have rigged bungee cords to frame of bimini and hung privacy curtain (beach towels) around head when guest is very modest.
