We have started talking to Fairclough Sailmaker located in New Haven CN regarding a winter cover for our Legend 37.5. We are considering a full cover that fits over metal tubing and covers most of the hull. Fairclough says it can do the entire job by mail order. They have an extensive pattern library. Naturally, the cover is not inexpensive - it costs almost as much as the new main sail we postponed acquiring because of the cover. A local sail maker had very good things to say about Failclough. She buys all of her boat covers for her customers through Fairclough. Has anyone had any experience with a Fairclough cover purchased entirely through mail order?

Yes, I have...

I bought a Fairclough cover for my 40.5 when it was new. I called Fairclough and they made up the cover from their patterns. As far as I know, they did not travel to my boat to do any measuring. The cover was installed by them the first year (part of the original cost) and it fit perfect. I will say that on all subsequent years, I have been unable to duplicate the exact fitting of the cover. Close, but not perfect. However, it does fit very well. The great features of this cover is that it will fit the boat with mast in or out and with the boat on land or in the water. Also, the boom and dodger stay on and there is plenty of room inside to work. Temperature inside during the winter is MUCH warmer that the outside. I think it was money well spent. After 6 years, the cover looks like new except for a few soiled smudges. It is a two person job to install and remove. More people work even better. Last fall a buddy (no experience) and myself put it on in 5-6 hours, start to finish. Rich
