Fair lead for anchor line

While at anchor, the only fair lead is to the cleat in the anchor locker. Has anyone added a cleat on deck, aft of the locker? If so, how often doe the jib sheets get caught on it?

I use the existing docking cleats on either side of the bow with an anchor bridal and chain hook.

For a quick lunch/swim anchoring we just use the starboard bow cleat. For overnight we tie off another line and make a bridle that goes to both bow cleats.

Paul,

Why are we seeing the bottom of your boat in the photo? IS there a story to be told?

What is the downside of "over the anchor roller and to a bow cleat" for an overnight stay?

Depenmds on what kinda rode you have. All chain, use one of these: http://www.westmarine.com/buy/seafit--chain-hooks--P005_154_002_003

Combo line and chain, as long as the lead is fair, tie the rode off to a bow cleat.

PS - Can't wait to hear Paul's story...we're up in Canada (Vancouver Island) now, so I understand the tidal height differences. Hope it wasn't a rock ledge...

I bring the rode through the roller, take a bight around one of the bow cleats, then to the other bow cleat with a bight, and then to the rode with a rolling hitch to center the rod up to the stern of the bow roller support.

The bay was full of boats at Sucia Island State Park and the dock was full so...

I dropped anchor about 100 feet from dock in shallow water so I could wait

and get a spot at the dock.

When the tide was running the boat started to tilt and a few people ...

panic.

This started quite a stir among boaters at the dock and a lot of different

opinons.

Well when I was in the middle of nowhere in Desolation Sound BC,

about 6 years ago, in some remote cove and I caught my prop on something

and could not get loose.

When this old sailor came buy in a small tug and should me how they

dry dock boats for repair in the PNW.

We rigged a come a long to shore using my winch and pulled the boat

close to shore and shallow water and waited till the tide ran out and

I used a hacksaw to cut a old logging cable loose from the prop.......

That was the day I learned the difference between grounding

with a purpose without damaging the boat and grounding.

Tough story to follow.....
Anchoring, I only have 25' of heavy chain, I wrap the rode around the windlass a couple of times then over to the starboard cleat. Never really thought about it, just seemed like the right thing to do.
We are on an adventure for the next 2 weeks, lots of anchoring behind islands, could use a couple of tips. Not sure how I could use a bridal on rode, and a short chain.
Thoughts?

Cheers

25' is probably enough - rule of thumb, 1' per foot of boat. In most weather, your plan would be just fine. The windlass is designed to take the load. The only problem is the lead from the windlass to the cleat. It is not fair and it makes it impossible to close the anchor locker. Have a great time on your trip.
Joyce & I cruised for over 6 yrs on a Halberg Rassey 41 - anchoring out most of the time. We are just not use to not having a fair lead for the rode. A bridal on rope is not easy and I think it would be difficult to release under load.
