Our two year old Xantrex Statpower charger suddenly quit. When switched on, the Charging light on the remote panel briefly lights along with the 40 amp light then the unit quickly switches to Ready. The batteries are not fully charged and should be taking a charge if the unit was operating properly. I opened the charger and changed the fuse - still no change (or charge). Statpower wants $185 (plus shipping) to repair it. Any thoughts? Ned and Tani Strain s/v Family Therapy 1995 h336 Chiacgo

Twice that for a new one.

Ned: These are generally excellent units. A new one cost twice the rebuild price even at a discount.

Pulled the Following off the West Marine Site

I pulled the following off the West Marine review page for this charger. Which I was also looking at purchasing. "The connections between circuit card inside and the external terminals where wires are connected for the battery/ies is the weak link. Every time my charger exceeds 20-25 amps the solder connections on the circuit card melt. The wire between the charger circuit card & the external connections is 12 AWG solid copper. The TC-40 calls for minimum of 8 AWG wire between the charger & battery and the TC-20 calls for 10 AWG. The 12 AWG/solder connections act as a fusable link well below the max amperage of the TC-40 unit. This arrangement needs to be re-engineered. I would ask the manufacturer if it has befor purchasing the TC-40. The manual indicates there are no servicable parts inside. There are several fuses inside that need to be external or accessable so they can be replaced. I had little problem opening and repairing the connections on this unit. I wish I could have upgraded the circuit card connections. If your going to spend this much $$ go with an inverter/charger that has terminals an wiring to handle this kind of load + get more for your $$."
