Factory style materials for modifications.

I'm making some improvements to the cabin layout of our 32 CC Oday and would like to use the same materials as the original was fitted out with. Some of the bulkheads are an off white panel, perhaps formica, and I am seeking a source for it. I am expanding the galley approx. 24" forward on the stbd. side to house a drop-in Engel ref. system and provide much needed stowage for galley stores. On the port side will reside a dinette arrangement to remove the large dropleaf table in the salon. It is difficult for even normal sized persons to navigate around getting to the v-berth. In the aft cabin, the vanity sink will give way to a stand up chart table and additional cabinets for stowage. The design should appear similar to the original factory finish and I'm hoping someone may have sourced these panel materials for their project. HELP!!

Ya' think this material is still being used or will I have to get some marine ply and cover it with formica?

it IS available, but you will have to search for it...
you can get it in a high or medium density version HDO or MDO, respectivly... High Density Overlay... the stuff you want is white or off-white formica overlay...

check with a dedicated lumber yard, or a quality cabinet shop...... or someplace that specializes in (more specifically their suppliers), large ship refits....

the stuff isnt cheap, but its well worth the cost to be able to cut the shape you want, and only have to cap the edge with wood to make it look professional and complete the project...

Plywood with melamine laminated to it.

I'm surprised that there is very little information on the internet about this material. My guess is that it went out of favor prior to the existence of these discussion forums.
I replaced my counters in my O'day 39 with exact match that I purchased from Home Depot. They also have melamine panel in stock but this is particle board, something we all would agree does not belong in boats.
I do not believe O'day used marine plywood with melamine laminated to it because my counter around the faucet holes and ice box delaminated (admittedly after 30 years) but no other areas including the table and chart table delaminated so I would think that your application does not need marine plywood either since it won't be constantly wet.
The page below shows my boat after I installed the new counter tops. It matches exactly to the other areas of the boat that have the original material (table tops etc.). There is also a picture of the 1983 brochure with showing the same material. My guess is that you can special order laminate on both sides and any thickness. the stuff is still available...and the outdoor grade is relatively expensive.. here is a link to one supplier

and remember, home depot or lowes is NOT a dedicated lumber yard... try parr lumber.


and even marine plywood can become delaminated... depending on how many times it has been saturated and dried out... and of course, the ultimate quality of the glue that was used in those days...
