Extremely Important Message About Oil Filter

Just got off the phone with Torresen again. I asked them if the Yanmar engines have oil filters. The person there had to ask the mechanic. He said that to his knowledge, the manual does not say anything about the filter. But here is what you do....... Facing the engine from inside the boat, look off the left side of the motor. Down low you will see a large stop cock type handle. Normally, (twice) a season, you are supposed to turn that handle back and forth about 10 times or so. This will self clean the filter that resides within. It is nothing more than a metal mesh screen. However, if the screen has not been cleaned for a long time (Hand cleaned by removing), you will have to unbolt the 3 bolts that hold the plate (triangular) in most cases that the stop cock knob goes through. Then, pull the entire device out. Clean with a soft brass wire brush. They gave me the impression you can use a cleaner to clean the metal as well like engine cleaner. Wipe clean and put back in the motor. They were saying you can probably get away with using the same gasket for re-assembly. I hope I helped you guys by this information I found out today! I am off to my boat to clean that oil filter. I suppose it has not been cleaned in ages! Marina

Like Jim said, what engine? Do you have some

kind of antique? The filter on smaller Yanmars is a standard unit. If you don't buy it from Yanmar just go down to your auto store and ask for a filter for a Mazda GLC.(several Mazda's use this filter) And it's half price. I installed a remote filter kit from Summit Racing. It's their universal remote oil filter kit. It uses a Ford full size canister. Advantages are; longer lasting, (larger) no mess because filter is held over drain pan when changing or draining when just changing oil and it was cheap. $39.95.

Some don't have filters

e.g., the SB8 and its successor engines have a mesh screen in lieu of a standard filter which requires periodic turning. Don

I am going to take a break now. See you guys later

To those who asked, I have the SB8 series of Yanmar. No, it is not an antique. And now, it is not an actual filter so to speak. The unit is actually built right into the side of the engine. Three bolts hold it in and it has an O ring to seal the oil into the engine. In order to clean this Stainless Steal Part, the oil first needs to be drained. Turning it, I found is actually not a good idea. Turning the handle actually loosens up the metal shards that are trapped in between the rings. Many think there is a screen in there. But actually, it looks like hundreds of very thin washers stacked on top of each other. Between each washer like piece, there is another piece of metal that is stuck in between. As you rotate the handle, the metal pieces scrape out all the crap between the washers. It seems that they are also magnetized to attract the metal bits. I found that brake cleaner and a rag were great for getting it all clean. Then I reassembled and filled the engine with new oil. Thank you everyone for your advice. I am finding that when it comes to Yanmar engines advice, it is best to go to the service manual and better yet to go to a mechanic that deals with yanmar and is well acquainted with your make and model. (They often give the best advice.) I think I am going to take a break from my Hunter! I have been working on her now for 3 days getting her ready for winter. So, if you see that I am not posting as much, it is simply because I am off doing other things. "Winterizing my other 2 yachts :-( " However, I have enjoyed everyone's company, advice and wonderful treatment! You Guys are the best! Take Care ! Marina
