Hi,
I have a Hunter 170 and would like to use some fenders. However since the beam is wide using the stern and bow cleats is not very helpful. I'm using the shroud hooks for one fender but I would like to add another one on the beam sides, as that would be the best place to hang it.
Does anyone have any experience with this, given the ABS/APC construction and how should I proceed (I'm afraid not to create a weak point with the screws). What screw length should I use, would be ok if it goes into the foam as well, do I need to put anything (silicone, etc) between the cleat and the hull, should I drill first?
Thanks,
Steve.

If possable you should through bolt the clete. drill through the clete and slip a bolt in to locate the second hole. use a generous amount of silicone between the clete and the deck, don't wipe it off while it's wet, it makes a mess. After the silicone dries trim the excess with a razor or knife. Given the fact that your boat is light and the forces on the the clete wont be great use stainless fender washers as backing plates and self locking nuts.

HI my first reply ever! IN any event I have been reading this site for a couple of years now and evrywhere states NOT to use silicone sealer on fiberglass as it will contaminate the glass and not provide a seal, better to use butyl tape, (see the threads by Mainsail who also can hook you up with the stuff.

The 170 isn't fiberglass. It's made from luran a thermoformed plastic.

Depending on where you drill, you will likely have less than 1/4 inch of plastic over foam. You could drill then inject with epoxy to form a reasonable base. If it's just fenders, best bet is to run a taunt line from bow to stern cleat outside the shrouds and lash fenders to this. Works very well. Holes on a 170 tend to develop cracks....
