I would like to install an external cockpit mounted bilge pump on my Capri 18. I believe the newer model comes with a cockpit-mounted bilge pump. Does anyone have a Capri/Catalina 18 with the bilge pump installed ? I would like to get a picture of exactly where it is mounted from both inside the starboard storage locker and from the cockpit. Can anyone help me ? Thanks, Chris

Here are some measurements...

But it probably is more important to fit the pump you are going to use. Mine is about 1/2 inch forward of the locker lid, and 1 inch lower than the edge of the opening. But it looks like the important points are: body of pump doesn't protrude into locker opening, but is tucked forward, and outlet hose runs along under opening edge. Pickup is in low point behind battery. Sorry no pictures, my digital camera apparently went snowmobiling (still happening up in the mountains) with my son this weekend. Side note, I had never used mine, and my bilge is dry and dusty, so I dumped in some water and pumped it out, just to make sure everything worked - I feel safer now. I'll work on getting the pictures, but feel free to ask more if needed.

Add'l Pump Info

Thanks for the information. Could you provide a measurement from the cockpit floor to the center of the pump ? It would really help if you could provide pictures of how your pump is installed. If there is any way, I'd really appreciate it. I am thinking of using a Whale Urchin pump - which, according to Catalina, is the pump that they are using. How does your pump look externally ? Is it recessed into a white Whale cover or is it just exposed ? My problem is that I can't seem to find a good place to mount mine. My boat is an '89, and the cockpit wall has a chine in it up near the top. Something like this; * * * * Looking from Stern * ***** cockpit floor I'm not sure if this detail is still in the newer molds. This does mean that I really need to mount the pump below the chine - otherwise it will not mount flush. Does your boat have this chine ? On the inside, there is also some detail that makes this harder to install. The thickness of the side wall changes about 6 in. forward of the locker lid. Again, I'm not sure if the newer boats still have this detail. It looks something like this; * * Interior plywood divider ************ * mount here * ** TOP VIEW ** or mount here *********** ** Locker * ** Lid * ** * ************** stern Again, this complicates the installation. I think I either have to mount the pump within the small amount of thick area forward of the locker lid or try to mount it in the small amount of thin area just behind the plywood divider. The problem seems to be that if I mount it in the thick area, the outlet hose seems like it will be visible (and take up space) in the locker. And trying to mount it in the thin area does not really leave enough room to make the inlet connection (and the thin material seems pretty flemsy, so I think I would have to use some type of backing plate to strengthen it. Does your boat have this same detail ? If so, is the pump mounted in the thick or thin area ? Again, if I could just see exactly how they did their installation, I'm sure I could duplicate it (assuming the molds have not changed). If there is no way for you to get pictures, maybe I could send you a couple pictures of what my boat looks like so you could confirm that your detail is the same (or different). Maybe you could also sketch in where your pump is located and how the input & output lines are run. Thanks alot for any help you can provide - I really appreciate it. Let me know. Thanks, Chris

I'll try.....but......

Wow - I didn't look at it that closely. I am heading out to the boat later this pm, and planning on staying out tonight, so I will have lots of time to ponder it. Back fairly early tommorrow (my wife has a meeting) so I should have something for you then. Very good scketching and description by the way, I think I have a good mental picture of your's, I just never looked that closely at mine. That is the same pump Catalina uses, with the cover - makes a pretty neat looking installation.
