What is the best finish to apply to exterior teak? How many coats, etc?

Cetol

I use Cetol on all exterior teak. I put 4-5 coats on at beginning of season. It looks great.

I agree with Sean. Over the years there has been much discussion on this topic. It is easy to apply, looks great, and lasts. I am in a northern climate. Three coats will last 2 seasons without any touchup!

Jerry,I don't think there is any ONE best finish for teak. Many sailors like the look of oiled teak (too much work for me). Others like the traditional varnish finishes.I like Cetol for its low maintenance and high durability. It does lend a slight yellowish color to the teak that some may not like. I've not used Armada which I understand has the characteristics of Cetol but has a much clearer appearance. Happy sanding!Mark KisselKittiwake/98H240

Armada for me

Used cetol on my 280 and now use Armada (no gloss) on my 380. The best way to describe Armada ids to say it's Cetol without the gross orange coloring the cetol has. Going on 2nd season with Armada and it looks brand new. Looks more like varnish withour the work or the shine.Practical Sailor has a test of varnish's this month including cetol and armada.Bob KnottH380

I like Sikens Cetol. It has lasted very well for two years and gives a great golden finish.

Gool Ol Teak oil where sun light hits it, several times a year and keep putting it on, I will do 3 coats over a week end and for about a month for new teak, and clean and oil 3-4 times a year that way, the more times you do this, Clean, fine wool or brass wool, and oil, Dry and repeat, the better it will look over time.Bill
