I had an amazing time soda blasting my boat bottom. It was great. It ate away the paint but left the gel coat. The only drawback is the cost of the soda. I put down a blue tarp and used a shop-vac to pick up the soda. Then ran it through a screen. It ran through the blaster again with no problem. Wear a good hood, face shield and respirator. I was comfortable most of the time. Much more comfortable than sanding. Just point, shoot and watch it turn white. Oh, wear ear plugs. Not for the noise just to keep the soda out of your ears.

I don't know what kind of bottom paint I was removing.

I bought the cheapest media blaster from Harbor Freight($34.00). The soda cost more than the blaster. I blasted my keel with black diamond and the bottom with soda. It took a long time with this small blaster but it was very relaxing compared to sanding.

Just be aware that if you're doing it yourself, you'll need a fairly substantial compressor to keep up with the airflow needed.

There are a number of issues

1. A good or bad job depends vastly on the skill of the person driving the blaster as it can and will remove stuff other than bottom paint

2. At least around here you have to work under a tarped boat as they do NOT want the stuff wondering around and this makes it hard to see what your doing

3. You also have to be careful about the dust wondering inside the boat

The above being said i have seen great results and some disasters so pick your vendor with caution :)

IMHP i found scraping with the correct tool and technique pretty fast
