Expansion tank

I just added an expansion tank for my pressure water system. WOW. what a difference it makes. No more water pump cycling on and off everytime you turn the water on, and much more consistant pressure while the water is on. The cost was $150 installed.

Mark's Tanked....

Did you change out the pump too? I think it is a bypass pump that is designed for use without a tank. The Mfg advised me to switch it to a non bypass unit which I did and kept the old unit as a spare. I'm thinking about doing it again. What size tank did you use? RD

Rick's answers..

I stayed with the same shurflo pump. the tank is 2 gallons.

Mark, if you installed what I THINK you did...

It's an accumulator tank, not an expansion tank. Pump fills it from the water tank, keeps it pressurized...when you turn on a faucet, you draw water from the tank till the level drops enough to drop the pressure...then the pump comes on long enough to refill it...right? That's an accumulator...they come in a number of sizes,

Yeah..What Peggie said

Accumulator tank NOT Expansion tank..sorry for the misleading info.

Mark; More 'Accumulator' Thoughts...

Mark: I take it your experience on the Surflow pump is that it works fine even though it is a bypass model? The Sureflow guy got all over me for using the bypass model (no accumulator tank) because he said it would run too long in conjunction with a tank and wear prematurely. I did, and didn't notice it doing so although it did seem to 'hunt' a bit before the pressure switch kicked it off. The direct pump I replaced it with cut off immediately when pressure built. Truely, I didn't think it was a big deal. It sure was better to not have as much cycling with the tank even though it was a small tank. FYI: I put rubber 1/4" plyable plumbing washers between the pump feet and the bulkhead when I installed it and it made a BIG difference in transmitted sound and vibration. Rick D

Good advise Rick..

I will try the rubber washers against the bulkhead. The pump has always been a little on the noisy side, perhaps the washers will help. Have not experienced the "hunting" that you mention. The pump runs steadily until the proper pressure is achieved then shuts off.
