I have a 1983 H30. The exhaust has been rigged with a PVC elbow in the hose with 27 layers of duct tape over it. The PO decided that that was the proper way to fix it. My question is, How is the bend in the rubber exhaust hose supposed to be and where can I get the proper parts to fix it? I just replaced the cockpit drain hoses and they were not crossed and leaked. The PO thought that that was the way it was supposed to work too.

I have a Home Depot elbow but

this is going a bit too far. Why not replace it with black pipe fittings?

Cockpit drain hoses crossed?

I'm wondering if that is something I need to worry about on my H31? No duct tape on my exhaust elbow! Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

Huh ?

Elbow shouldn't be made from PVC. It should be metal. Is the engine a Yanmar or did the previous owner put a different engine in it? Go to Yanmar website and find the part. As for "cockpit drain hoses and they were not crossed and leaked", what does that mean? Are you asking if they should be crossed? Crossed with what? And where is it leaking?

Crossed and Not Leaking

The cockpit drains on the 1983 H30 should drain out the opposite side of the boat. Port cockpit should be hooked to the starboard through hull and the starboard drain should be hooked up to the port through hull the plumbing diagram in the manual shows it connected that way, but on my boat, they ran straight out. The reason that they are crossed that way is so that when the boat is heeling the drains will drain out of the proper side. As for the leaks, the hoses were cheap junk and were falling apart. They were leaking into the aft qtr. berth.

So let's see.... I'm on port tack....

and my boat is heeled 30 degrees to starboard. The port cockpit drain is connected to the starboard thru-hull and because of the heeling angle (which I am getting comfortable with, but that's another thread :) the water flowing from the port cockpit drain has an almost vertical path to flow out of the boat and back into the ocean. With the boat heeled over to starboard, all the water is on the starboard side of the cockpit, and the port drain is high and dry. Meanwhile, the starboard drain is running 30 degrees more uphill than when level. I'm not doubting you, makinthyme, just not quite understanding why those hoses are crossed. Well Bob...

Why don't you ask Hunter, that's the way they have it laid out in the plumbing diagram for the boat.

Where is this elbow located??

If it is inbetween two pieces of rubber exhaust hose I wouldn't worry, Vetus (www.vetus.com) makes "plastic" elbows for use in the exhaust system. Thier waterlocks and mufflers are also plastic. The duct tape is an intriguing idea since it comes in so many colors today.... Seriously, there is no need for the tape. A lot of people don't realize that after the water is injected at the mixing elbow the exhaust is basicly "cold", try touching the exhaust hose right after the mixing elbow and you'll see (feel?).

crossed lines

they are crossed so when you are heeling over, water doesnt come in back up through the line, possible putting water back into the boat.
