Hunter 1981 Hunter 27 Willsboro Bay Marina
Hi everybody! I am new owner of 1981 Hunter27 and I need help. I have
2GM20F yanmar with exhaust outlet molded from fiberglass and under the
waterline. This is the first sailboat I have seen it on and I am not comfortable
with the fact that I will not be able to see the water spit out. I am planning to
reroute the exhaust to my stern and use the old outlet for cocpit drain as the
original is by my opinion not adequate. Any sugestions will be grately apreciated

most if not all hunters with inboard have exhaust this way. don't think its an issue. if no cooling water goes to engine, temp alarm will come on. not usually a problem. why fix when it's ain't broken?

I think you will find that almost boats after the mid 1980s are required to have the exhaust under the boat rather than out the stern to avoid the station wagon effect of the diesel exhaust coming into the cockpit.

It has made it for the past 30 years that way, I would leave it alone.

You can normally hear the difference between no water (hollow sound) vs water exhausting. You can try this yourself. Turn off the water and listen to the difference.

I'm not sure if you have access to the hose from the outside of the boat? My 29.5 has a compartment with a hatch. Part of my start up routine is to open the hatch and to hold the exhaust hose. When everything is working properly, I can feel the water as it discharges out the exhaust.

Do Not accept the Hunter designed exhaust plan. The Hunter plan was the cause of my engine exhaust sucking in sand and ruining the engine. Please follow the Yanmar exhaust suggestions at http://www.yanmarhelp.com/i_exhaust.htm

Reroute your exhaust with a high exhaust hose loop. And exit your exhaust above the water line to decrease the back pressure on your engine.
