1980 Yanmar QM15 (with 4400 engine hours) experiencing white smoke(water vapor) when under load (@2200 RPM/maximum power @3000). Engine does not appear to be over-heating.Exhaust elbow replaced during last 600 hours . No major loss of power. Major problem? Suggestions? Thx

Let me guess,

it was a cool morning right?

Your car does this and you don't get excited. You dump a lot of water into hot exhaust and then dump the load into cool moist air and what do you think you should get.
We get this question every fall BTW.

It is really nothing to worry about.

Re: Let me guess,

Bill, Thx. I live in FL.Vapor appears on warm afternoons (also) and will continue all day.More vapor as the engine is placed under increasing loads. Someone suggested could be head gasket. ted

I had that engine (2QM15) on my previous 1980 H30. Mine was raw water cooled. I found that the factory thru hull for the engine raw water was on the small side and I replaced it with a larger scoop. The thermostat was also subject to rusting rather quickly in salt water and I changed mine out every other year. Never any cooling/heating problems.

When this occurs it is a sure sign of a raw water flow issue. Cold days will cause a similar appearance but in warm weather it becomes a sign that there is restricted raw water flow. Could be worn impeller, restriction on the intake thru-hull, clog in the intake hose, clogged sea strainer, collapsing wall of an intake hose, restriction in the HX, exhaust elbow etc. etc...

The minute my vessel starts showing any sort of steam I know I need to clean my strainer. I clean it out and no more steam.

Given warm weather (I sure wish we had some BTW) then

I concure with MS. Restriction in the raw water system somewhere.

Agree with Maine Sail and others. You've got a cooling water restriction/flow problem. check all the culprits and it'll solve your problem.
