Anyone have an easy way to get that crap off, tried using my regular boat soap and it didn't even budge! thanks, Greg

Greg: Use Island Girl. The Pink or the SeaGlow should do the job. Then you may as well do the entire transom, hull, topside cockpit etc. There are other things that may remove the black, but if your gelcoat is not sealed it is just going to come back.

Diesel stains
Try dipping a candle in old engine oil- get blackened right! Boat wax is no different. It gets oily stains into the wax (which is really a hard fat). Therefore to get rid of the stain (or black streak pollution run off) you need something strong enough to remove the wax. While IG Cleaners will do this there are several cheap black streak removers out there too tht work well. But you have to replace the protection by fresh waxing etc. An exception is IG Superwax. We have reduced the wax content per se - the product is nearly all hard resin and you have to dissolve off little of the surface. The regular cleaner will not work, but ours do fo this purpose. Our new glaze dissolves off the marks and replaces with a stain-resistant coating. Now we have had complaints on soot/pollution gathering on FRESH or THICKLY APPLIED superwaxed (or glazed) surface. This is just on the top dissolved in the oily residue rising to the top after application. It is easy to remove with microfiber cloth but eventually evaporates. If sooty, use the the microfiber cloth and a little IG pink (even with water dilutution).Some shop bought cleaners work somewhat too. We are currently doing a proper study of soot and black streaks and then we'd like to do some beta tests with visitors to this site.. Worst case scenario is soot penetration into unwaxed neglected, chalky gelcoat. THen the soot goes into the pores of the gelcoat and have to be removed together with the oxidation - but that's another story.

What Gail said is also true because
"Cleaner waxes" contain kerosine or Stoddard solvent that dissolves off the old wax with the soot impregation and replaced shine too. SHould have mentioned this

Try a product called Roll Off. Begin by wetting the surface with water, spray on Roll Off, wait a minute or so, and go over it with a soft bristle brush. Rinse, and voila, no more stains. The Roll Off might also remove the wax on the hull, but it won't bother the fiberglass.
