Exhaust smoke?

I have an 85 Hunter 28.5. I noticed over the weekend when I reved the engine either in forward or reverse a little bit of grey smoke came out of the exhause and looked like a little discharge of oil or soot on the water. Is this normal or something that should be looked in to?

Ditto!

Same thing for me this weekend, and I'm panicked-could it be a blown gasket?! I'm imagining some expensive valve job...

Try "exhaust soot" in the archives

There are 283 listings, so this is obviously a common occurence (whew!) What I'm getting out of it is: 1.A normal thing, but could be overload or infrequent use 2. Check air filter, batteries, and prop! 3.The worst seems to be a fouled injection system. Brian, see if you can come up with anything else...

Color.

Brian/Scott: It is important to try to determine the color of the smoke. Blue is usually an indication of oil burning, White is water (steam), Black is fuel. I would take the boat out and run it at 3000+ rpms for an hour or so. Be sure to keep and eye on things. If something does not look right, then you may need to shut her down. See if you are still having these problems after a good hard run. How often do you run the engine at 2500-3000 rpms and for how long?

How many RPM do you run at

You need to be running at least 2800 or you'll fowl the mixing elbow! If you had a blown gasket your engine would be losing power!

Running Over 3000 RPM .................

............ for a few minutes every hour is about the second best thing you can do to blow out the crud. However, as Jim A. has said, the best way is to avoid running under 85% of max revs or about 2900 hours RPM. Regards, s/v Island Hunter

hard to put it up that high

It's hard to get it up around 2900 when most of my motoring is inside the harbor. I usually don't use my engine much outside of that.

You should change your ways.

If you are usually motoring around the harbor, you need to make a point of running the engine hard for 10 - 15 minutes every 2-3 weeks. You are doing long term damage to your engine. You are contaminating your oil with fuel. If you rev the engine and get it hot it will help burn off this contamination. You are also setting yourself up for glazed cylinders and ring problems in the future.
