Can someone speak to the difficulty of replacing the exhuast riser and elbow on a larger Hunter? I have a 380 with a 39 hp yanmar? Approximately how long wouldl it take, and are there any special considerations to acccount for?

The most important thing is access to the riser and elbow. If you can supply some pictures showing the clearances, an approximation would not be difficult.

I pulled and inspected mine and reinstalled in less than an hour.

If I had all the tools and parts and didn't need to replace the hoses, i would guess about 2 hours.

In another post, I suggested a good welder to fix the old one. Mine would be $500 for just the parts.

Of course, shut off you inlet seacock and be prepared if that cock didn't stop the flow.

Jim...

PS: My access was simple and easy to work on.

Thanks for the great feedback. I'll snap some pic this weekend, while on the boat, and post them. Access is great from the rear. It's a Hunter 380 and a dream to work on. Plenty of access.

I changed mine out on my Hunter 31 (Yanmar 2gm) it was simple. Maybe an hour. I was instructed by my local Yanmar dealer that it would be easier to take off the exhaust manifold that the elbow is attached to (four bolts), then remove and replace the actual mixing elbow. Then replace the manifold with elbow attached. I vaguely remember putting a new gasket on the manifold but I'm not for sure on that. .I did need a bench vice to hold the old elbow while I took it off the manifold.

good tools and working sea cocks, should be a two hour job a the most, take the whole assembly off Manifold to the exhaust flex hose. Much easier on the dock, pick up tailgate or back of a suburban. Be careful if you choose a PB Blaster product that it is not to caustic to the other stuff on the engine.

I think the only non-standard tool, was a large breaker bar and some way to brace the elbow, I used the trailer hitch and two large C-clamps.
