Exhaust questions

My old volvo installation had a water lift muffler (added at some
point- not original)

It was located on in encased plywood shelf under the aft-starbord
corner of the cockpit sole.

Acording to Steve that is the same location for his muffler and is
the same as most he has seen, and it has not been a problem.

Technically it is not ideal because the muffler should be located 12
inches below the point of water injection on the exhaust. (prevents
seawater from tailing waves, or from a build up of repeated attempts
to start the engine, from backing up into the cylinders.

I really cant see a much better place to mount this thing. West
marine sells a small water lift for tight spots, and I've seen some
boats that mount the water lift directly under the engine. I'm not
sure there is room there either and it would make oil changes an
ordeal.

Anyone have any better Ideas?
