Exhaust Problem

I have a 79 Cat 30 with an A-4 and it looks like the pipe that goes from the back of themanifold to the muffler has a hole in it. I think it is the original pipe,it is pretty corroded and has an asbestos cover. The mechanic told me that itwould need to be replaced, however he wants to make some modifications. Hetold me that catalina did it wrong and to make the exhaust system workproperly, he would have to use the space where I currently have a drawer sothat the exhaust pipe can go up several more inches and then over to themuffler to prevent water from going back into the engine. So the question is....Has anyone heard of this problem or had to make thismodification?

Catalina did reconize this problem, they sent out an addendem that if you cranked the engine for more than 30 seconds,you would have to manually drain the muffler otherwise it would back up into the engine.

Do i have to drain the muffler to remove the manifold? Is it safe just to remove the manifold and replace it?

No need to drain

You don't need to drain the muffler to remove the exhaust piping. I built a new one for my 5411 Diesel using standard black iron plumbing parts (don't use galvanized). Bronze would probably have been a better choice, but the original black iron piping lasted 15 years so I'm not too concerned. I wrapped it with an insulated wrapping made for wrapping race car headers that I bought at an automotive supply store. It's not a difficult project. You should be able to re-use the piece that attaches to the muffler that has the water hose attachment.
