I'll try all owners. Slight but noticeable exhaust leak on an inboard volvo diesel. Smell test doesn't work, tight install. Is there an easy means of locating leak, short of pulling engine and rebuilding complete system?
Thanks

Not familiar with Volvo but can you try a soap bubble test on the hosing from the boat exit back towards the engine ? Hose walls as well as joints may be leaking.

Test near the engine immediately after starting so everything is still cool.

A common place for leaks and ultimate failures on all diesels is the injection elbow. This is where cooling water enters the exhaust hose to cool the exhaust. That would be the first place to look. Try removing the elbow and inspect it. It may well be quite crapped up with carbon and rust. The solution is to replace the elbow with new gaskets.

The mixing elbow (injection) could be the culprit. If you remove it, be sure you have the gaskets, etc. to put it back together.

I like the water/bubbles test. Mechanics often use an improvised stethoscope combined with visual and smell inspection.

Never tired it but what about a Carbon monoxide sniffer. Move one of the home sensors near the exhaust pipe and see what happens.

Any leak from an exhaust system will be a positive pressure.
Soapy water will bubble up and show your leak.

Take a spray bottle and fill with a soapy water solution. Spray the exhaust components with the solution.. Start engine.. Lok for bubbles. Don't be afraid to spray on more while the engine is running...
