Does anyone know the difference between exhaust hose and a typical radiator hose other than the words marine and the price?

I understand it is a matter of the heat that the hoses are designed to withstand. Temps in an engine exhaust can reach 1000º F.

The marine exhaust hoses I have seen are much thicker and reinforced, than the radiator hoses I have used on my car.

There is an ABYC standard that no contact point in a boat engine space is to exceed 200º F. Why you see exhaust manifolds insulated.

You may find the hose you seek at a non marine store like Granger.

I used this article from Steve D'Antonio to expand my knowledge base on exhaust systems. It might help.

I assume you are talking automotive radiator hose, since wet exhaust and marine coolant hose are typically the same hose ?

I looked up the spec but can't easily find info without paying for the SAE data.

At a guess.. automotive rad hose isn't designed for exhaust gases, and wouldn't likely be designed for salt water. Marine coolant/exhaust hose is more flexible based on having used both. As @jssailem mentions, temp specs would be different.

As for a quick price comparison:

(Local auto parts store)
Continental 56016. 1” hose 3 feet long=MSRP: $27.24 aka $9.08 USD/foot

(Local hose company that carries marine hose)
G388-100 1" SOFTWALL MARINE COOLANT & EXHAUST HOSE $5.32 USD / ft

Not sure what price you are payin and where..., but as shown above, I can buy marine grade for the same or less.

Dayco's website states that their automotive cooling hoses can't be used with oil. Unfortunately it doesn't show any specs

@Leeward Rail Online prices for one foot of 1.75" will cost me $30-40 after shipping. Does anyone out there have some extra (new or used) ~1.75" hose they don't need?

Yeah. Shipping cost can be ugly, especially recently. Even moreso if you only need a foot of it. Maybe a sailor near you wants hose and will share shipping ?

I could easily go buy a foot for you ($8.67 usd) but the cross border shipping cost would be ugly.

I was about to ask you what the local supplier was until I saw you were in Winnipeg
Just in case anyone else is interested:

They have warehouses across Canada, and for those in Washington state, their main office is in Vancouver BC.

They carry Marine Grade hose (including ABYC spec) hydraulic hose, etc etc.

I don't know how far you are from a west marine but they should be able to have a piece shipped to your "local" store for pick up for no charge. They should have something that will work for you for under $20.

You are correct sir. $16 shipped to the store. I assume everything is more expensive from WM but I am surprised every so often. Thank you!

Not sure where you live (assuming somewhere in Illinois). Have you tried any local agricultural or industrial hose suppliers? Many will also have access to marine hose.

One I came across.

Sorry x that one was Florida!

Maybe somewhere like this.

This firm has multiple locations and a search returns marine exhaust hose.

@Project_Mayhem,. You may have your problem solved, but another suggestion for people viewing this thread, is to contact a shop that does repairs. It can work well for small little items, or short sections of hose. They are often throwing leftover stuff away.

A little late to this discussion, I suspect the main difference between exhaust house and radiator hose is resistance to harsh chemicals. Exhaust gases can carry all kinds of nastiness along with unburned fuel and oils. Radiator hose only has to deal with hot coolant, not a harsh hot liquid.

In my experience Grainger is always very overpriced, regardless of product. Not sure how they survive.

Easy ordering, availability and integration with existing business processes is my guess
The cost of looking for a little cheaper price may well be higher than the money saved. Grainger, Fastenall, McMaster-Carr all specialize in quick delivery and extensive inventory and one-stop shopping.
