Hi: I've just purchased a 1989 40 foot Hunter Legacy. The original exhaust hose needs replacing. It goes from the engine towards the stern under the floorboard to the port side and up into the rear port cabinet area (this has a plastic slide window) and proceeds backdown into the stern area ant out the thru hull. This seems strange, is this routed correctly?

I have tried everywhere I can think of to get the information. Hope all of can help. Thank you, Ed

sounds about right. you need it to go up above waterline some as to prevent backwash from flowing back to engine. your exhaust thru'hull is underwater right?

I'll second that.

In mine, the hoses forms a large loop at the very end to ensure one point in the hose is well above the water level and then exhausts below the water line.

Makes for a quiet exhaust but it's a bugger to determine if you're pumping sea water. Finally installed a flow sensor in the sea water line to keep tabs on it..

Thank you, Ed

Thank you. What would you all think about the large bend placed in the stern area behind the rudder post. I was thinking if the bend is on the port side and heeled over the water line may void the bend's effectiveness.

Yup if you can place the bent at center line, well and good. You're right that a heel to port will lower the height above water. Usually thats not an issue but I suppose in heavy seas and heel, may be achillies heel although I haven't experience this.

Thank you. I'll try routing the hose so it has a high bend, center line and not in the port shelf area. Now the water leak under the binnacle driping onto the after bed. Later, Ed
