Thursday I left my marina and when I increased the RPM's on my Universal 3 cyl diesel I noticed a strange noise. Checking below I noticed the exhaust hose above the muffler was leaking so bad that no water was coming out the stern.
I ran the motor about 10 minutes letting the bilge pump take care the water coming out the hose. Since I carry radiator hose tape I thought I could tape the hose up and limp back into the marina after sailing. I taped the hose as best I could Tried to start the motor and it just clicked as if the battery was dead. I switched to the house batteries and had the same results.
Could both the problems be related? Did I pump seas water into my motor and what can I do to solve this problem. Do I pull out the glow pulgs and try turning it over. Any thoughts

yup its flooded

there should be a drain screw at the base of the muffler box, drain the box, then there should be a compression release lever on the top of the motor near the end of the valve cover, hold it down and crank the motor over, it should pump out, then warm the glow plugs and fire her up.
Scarry aint it?

Thanks for the reply, found a hole in the pipe between the exhaust manifold and muffler also having the starter checked.

Re: yup its flooded

Had the starter checked out it's OK. Moved the compression release lever and tried to crank the motor. Just gave a short GRRR. Is there something else I have to do? Everything was working fine till the exhaust pipe broke.

are you sure you drained the muffler too? Is there something wrapped on the prop?

You solved my problem. When I bought the boat the previous owner showed me the compression release lever. He said that one position was for running and the other was for releasing the compression. This is first time I needed to release the compression and I didn't realize that you had to push and hold it. Your reply stated to hold the lever and that gave me the clue I needed. Did it the correct way and all is well. It's all a learning experience and this form is a great help. Thanks Again
