Exhaust Flapper a Valve

On my 1987 Catalina 34 there is, according to the manual, a "Flapper Valve" on the exhaust hose at the through hull fitting. The purpose of the valve is to "prevent surging up the exhaust line in a following sea." My question is whether or not this flapper valve is prone to malfunctioning therefore not allowing exhaust gases/water discharge from the engine/water muffler. I look forward to the comments.

Stu, thanks much for that info. I have looked in the Lazarette and could not see anything but the hose and through hull, but assumed there must be something inside the through hull I could not see. FYI, I have hull 299. Bought her about a year ago and still learning the systems.

Nice, we have a vintage boat, too. Best place to learn is at the link I provided. This site is helpful, too, great folks here.

Stu,
I have already sourced the C34IA web site for info. I need to join and register my boat. Can I do this all online?

Yes, you can pay with PayPal, or snail mail. Your boat, your choice. :)

We look forward to your membership, thanks.

Unnecessary on a C34, don't know about a C36. On the C34 the exhaust hose goes from the bottom turn underneath the transom all the way up into the port locker then forward and down to the muffler under the head sink. It's 17 feet long! Having something with a moving part in an relatively inaccessable part of the boat makes no sense to me.
