Late last fall I bought an '85 Catalina 30. The surveyor said I should install an exhaust flap. I don't see any exhaust flaps on any of the boats in drydock. Is one really needed? Boat has 14hp diesel fresh water cooled. He said that in following seas water may get into the engine. He suggested making one out of a flap of leather..........any comments?

The flap is a relatively cheep way to protect your engine in a situation with following seas, I would recommend having one. You can get a nice stainless steel exhaust flap assembly on Catalina Direct which would work well.

You should check to see that your exhaust hose has a rise in it between the engine and the outlet and that your wet exhaust from the HX into the exhaust riser nipple before the muffler has an antisiphon device and that it works. The choice of a flap is yours. If that other stuff isn't working, a flap won't help much. If it is, a flap could be considered belts with suspenders, but many C30s have them. You might want to discuss this on the C30 website (www.catalina30.com), too, they're specialists on your specific boat.

I have a 27' TR Catalina and I installed a EX. Flap to prevent the following seas from drowning out the engine. I was on a friend's boat; he throttled back, and Wham, the water was sucked into the engine cylinders. My Atomic 4 has a riser, siphon valve; a like of redundancy doesn't hurt.
