Ex Climbers to climb a mast

If i wanted to climb a mast, that had no halyards on it,because its not a mast its a tree. But its straight like a mast. And my wifes kitty has been up it for about 14 hours now, and he is now asleep about thirty foot from the ground, with his body tucked over a couple of branches, his head hanging out over an upper branch, his body laying on the lower one. Googled this, and apparently cats do die because they cant get back down.

Here is what i have, Appolo 13 mission, no real head for heights, although, i can struggle, and did a little bit of rock climbing. Got italian rigid climbing boots, I used to have crampons, and and ice axe, which would have made climbing the tree possible, (well with two ice axes) got 50 metres, of 12 mm climbing rope (150 feet of ten year old rope) got a harness, 1 caribeener, one rappel figure of eight, a pair of softer goretex climbing boots, one hammer, some nails, couple of lenghths of 2x4, power tools, (to cut up the 2x4 into short pieces to nail to the tree, and use as steps. Got a sixteen foot two section ladder, but got nothing to hammer in to the tree, to hook the rope around, and got no one on the ground to belay the rope, because my wife will faint if i ask her to do that. Havent been up more than a sixteen foot ladder in ten years, go no more climbing equipment, the tree is vertical, i wont leave the cat up there, if worst comes to worst, i will cut the tree down with a chainswa, while the cat is still alive, and hope he makes it. To the extremes, (i wont do this, but thought about it) shooting at him with a BB gun, to see if that makes him come down, but i wont do that, as it may drive him further up, or it may injure him, and he may just hang on and not act injured.

Any suggestion would be welcome.

Can't help but to picture the fire department rescuing the cat! I would try the bb-gun idea first though :)

Cheers,
Brad
I certainly wont be calling the fire department, this is an in house thing, but i think like humans, its easier for cats to go up than come down. I will wait until he is hungry and thirsty, and then his fear of coming down, may be overriden by his hunger and thirst, if that dosent work, i reckon i will have to go up and get him. Cats are not found it trees, because when they die, they fall out. the article is pretty acurate up until that. They die up the tree, bit like humans die up mountains. Humans dont fall out of mountains, (well sometimes they do) but cats die and can no longer hold onto trees, so they fall.

Get some of those boot spikes they use to climb trees or telephone polls. You might want to watch one of those logging shows to get some hints on how to climb the tree!

If not call United Rental for a man lift.

Call your local animal control officer (most towns have one if not try the counry animal control). They may be able to get the cat down or at least advise you. Be for I cut the tree down may you might want to call a local tree service with a bucket truck and have them put you up to remove the cat. My suggestions NOT to use the BB gun as it would probably cause more harm then good. Just imagine your neighbor call the police because they think you are about to shot the cat dead ! As well as it could cause the cat to climb up rather then down.

When I was a young firefighter, before the days of 911, calls came directly to our station house. I over heard this once, from Ol' Captain Dick Myers, who was a gruff, straight talking old school fireman,

"Lady, I've been a fireman for thirty five years, and not once have I seen a cat skeleton in a tree."

+1 for calling a tree service. I've used a service down here a couple of times (for taking dead trees down in a tight spot) and for what they charge it's well worth the money and the avoided hospital stay.

The Doritos Great Dane from the super bowl ad would say shoot at it and then cut the tree down just to be safe.

How about a boat hook and some kids with a sheet on the ground.

Maybe the local boy scouts need a marksmanship/climbing badge for cat retrievals.

"never seen a cat skeleton in a tree" ;) LMAO

Seriously, just find a bucket truck or a tree service to climb it if it's that stressful. Or find the local outfitters club and buy somebody a bag of pine nuts and a bottle of Fiji water to climb your tree.....

If you break your back/neck/leg for that cat don't expect any sympathy from it. Let that knowledge limit your airborne efforts.

ATLANTIC AL,

OK so it has been several days now and was just wondering what the status of the cat is and what you did you do to get it down ????

Looks as if we're to apply Hiesenberg's Uncertainty Principle here...Or Schrodinger's Cat!
