I am hoping that some one has run into this issue and come up with the resolution for it.
I currently own and operate a Evinrude yachtwin 9.9 i think the year is 89 not positive though. The motor runs great... when it starts. I am having a cold starting issue. The issue is very peculiar though, what happens is i will pump the ball pull the choke, set the throttle to the start position and pull the cord. The motor kicks over immediately and will run for about 4 seconds. If i don't immediately push the choke in and idle the motor up it stalls and then will not start for 15 to 20 mins.
Some times i catch it and sometimes i don't. It is rather embarrassing though when i don't. Then i spend the next 20 mins pulling the cord like and idiot.
I then give it a break and usually just sail off. then when underway i will pull it once and it will fire right up and run completely strong for the duration of the trip.
The reason i want this problem fixed besides embarrassment of course is a safety issue. What happens in emergency when she wants to be temperamental?
Here are some things i have tried and or recently done to the motor.
as far as parts go i have installed a new water pump and exhaust tube. spark plugs are new. Also some electrical work was done on it last year. I also had to remove the water jacket plate on the motor that connected to the pisser. It was all loaded up with salt and corrosion. Cleaned and re-gasket.
Some tricks to starting that have worked are as follow.
take the leg out of the water for a moment the start it and drop it.
while underway the motor seems to start more frequently? dont know why
the other day i cracked the tank cap to release some pressure that was built up, that helped for some reason.
So what is happening is the question i suppose? flooding....? not getting fuel?
Any and all comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
