Stuff seems to happen every day out there. This daily incident report is compiled a few days after the fact and does not have the USS Port Royal incident listed. http://www.cargolaw.com/presentations_casualties.php
It would suck big time to have been at the helm of the Port Royal though. I am sure that ship is equipped with depth guages or at least a fish finder.

They have all kind of sonar on board, not just to see the bottom but to also find subs. They were just not functioning normally, that's all. Having guests on board gets me distracted so I'm sure it does them too, espeically when they are high ranking officers.

What the article seems to suggest is that they ran aground when unloading the guests into a small boat. If that's the case, they must have gotten too close to shore and the current pushed them into lower waters. If that's what happened, I find it hard to believe they couldn't pull them off.

I think the article has errors in it. In any case, you can surely bet the crew is making big-time fun of the captain behind closed doors :) I wish I was there to see all that.

Just a thought...

Hawaii is very volcanic, with eruptions on the ocean floor as well on the islands almost continuously...not violent, just the same constant flow of lava that created the islands and are adding to their real estate. That has to change the bottom close to shore pretty much continuously too, a considerable amount every year, making it hard to rely on charts and even electronics for accurate knowledge of the bottom.

Admiral Nimitz Ran Aground

As a young officer Nimitz ran his destroyer aground he seemed to still have an OK career after that.

Thats sand around there, not many lava flows, and they keep their charts very accurate. Most skippers run aground at one time or another, or get their vessesl run down like Kennedy did.

There was a US navy captain back in the early 1900's maybe 1920's that was running down the coast of California with three other destroyers in his wake with an obligation to follow him. Around Pt Arguello some 12 nm NORTH of Pt Conception he made an easterly turn. Seems he thought he was already inside the Santa Barbara Channel, not allowing enough leeway for the current. BEEG MISSTAKE!

Three crashed into the rocks with some hundreds of injured and about 150 dead sailors.He did not sail again as captiain.
