I'm disappointed that there is no "Edmunds" for sailboats! Is purchasing a sailboat like purchasing an automobile, should you expect to pay less than the "sticker price"?? How does one know what is a fair deal? I'm looking at the Hunter day sailers 170, 212, & new 216. Would anyone be willing to share what they paid for these models?

There is a maunfactures suggested retail. The one thing no dealer has control is the freight costs. You need to deal with a dealer near you that will take care of your boat. Too often, I hear that dealers make alot but that is baloney as there is not much profit in the small boats. The dealer just like you needs to make a living; otherwise, there are no dealers nor one to take care of your boat either unless you take the boat back to the manufacture and depending on where you live that might be difficult. I know the costs but will not divulge them as I am a dealer and by the way I am on the NADA Dealer Advisory Board. I do not reveal who I am but at least now you have a dealer perspective to your answers. Crazy Dave Condon

Easy to check prices
Look on the classifieds listed right on this sight. Last week I saw adds for used 170's and new 216's. It seemed to me used 170's were abot 6600 to 7000 and new ones are about 7500 for the basic boat. when you add a spinnaker and a four stroke honda 2 hp and a bunch of other stuff the price goes way up. Right now the 216's are selling for 13000 with trailer and sails and ready to go! That's a lot of boat for the money and it sails like a dream. I bet we'll see that price go up soon. I haven't seen any 212's for sail everyone I've met who has one likes theirs and is planning on keeping it.

Gary, I have bought two small boats - a Seaward Fox (19') and a Hunter 260. Paid sticker price for the boat and the options. You get what you pay for. The dealers have a lot of set-up work when they get a boat. The Seaward came with all the hardware in a bag, for the dealer to install. The Hunter needed the mast rigged and tuned, as well as other work. The improtant thing is to make sure that your dealer does the work well. If you save a few bucks on a boat, and it isn't commissioned properly or well, you will regret it for as long as you own your boat. The old saying, "Pay me now or pay me later" is especially true with a new boat. Ray
