Just as a point of order--- should not the plural of 'forum' be 'fora'? Any Latin scholars out there to advise? ;) JC

Doldrums or Doldra

By Jove (or is it Jupiter?) John, I think you may be on to something there. Well maybe if the site were written in Latin anyway. And I do seem to recall stories of sailors getting stuck in the doldra trying to cross the equator. Or maybe not. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5

Nahhh

Colloquial usage argues for "forums" because it's easier to understand than Latin. Professor prefer we call their tribe almunae if they're female, while the rest of us prefer the professors come down from their ivory tower.

If it were Hunting rather than Hunter

...we could describe it as fora and fauna.

Phil, did you mean flora and fauna?...BTW

as JC said in his article, fora is the plural for forum, at least according to my WB dictionary. I have yet to find a professor in an ivory tower, only because my perception does not place them there. Terry P.S. No latin scholars in this neck of the woods. Just a humble servant.

Being persnickety

I guess thre two I hate most are data- used as singular when that's 'datum' and 'data' is plural; media- used as singular when that's 'medium' and 'media' is plural. We language majors can be a finicky and persnickety lot. JC 2 Ivory Tower, NJ
