Erie Bottom Paint Recommendations

We are thinking about getting a slip for the season for our 23.5 for the first time since we purchased her in 1993. The marina that we are considering is on Lake Erie, where we have problems with Zebra Muscles. Any suggestion on which bottom paint to use?

My 23.5 has been tied up on Lake Erie or St. Clair for 15 seasons. Like almost every sailboat in this area, I use VC-17m. It works well at keeping the algae and mussels away. I've had a few mussels in the centerboard tunnel at the end of a couple seasons but they never caused any trouble. Just glad I don't take the boat to any inland lakes; I'd be careful to power wash the whole area.

Same for us. We've had our 260 in Maumee River and Lake Erie waters since 2003, and VC-17M is the way to go. I use the self-serve car wash at the end of the season to power wash the bottom and everything comes off beautifully.

You might want to consider Interlux Micron CSC Extra. It went on a little thick, user error, but appears to be keeping the algae and zebra mussels at bay. Nice thing is that it lasts a few seasons and polishes away like soap. I went for Shark White/Gray, compliments white hull well on my H216.

I know this is going against the grain, but although we also have mussels and algae I've never painted the bottom of my H260 in Lake Michigan.

Once or twice a season I run the boat up on the beach and give the bottom a scrub with a long handled brush. This just loosens the scum.

Immediately after pulling the boat for the season I powerwash the bottom. The hull has a light green tint that is removed by using Slimy Grimy a great safe product.

The bottom always looks factory fresh bright white.

I think I've saved my self a lot of time, expense and effort using this method. Of course this works only for fresh water boats.
