I'm considering purchasing a 1985 Ericson 35-III. I'm looking for a good sailing boat for the Chesapeake Bay but also want to do some offshore trips to Bermuda and New England. I'd like to har from folks who know this boat about it's stability for this type of sailing. Thanks.

Fine boats

Hello Laura - The Ericson 35 is widely considered to be a high quality production coastal cruiser. Like many others, the boat isn't designed for major trans-oceanic work (not that it couldn't be done), but if prepared, I'd recommend it as a fairly rugged, nice sailing boat that would be suitable for the trips you've described. See Related link below for teaser review of the 35-III on Practical Sailor's web site. Enjoy! Trevor

Limited Experience

The 35 is a fast boat that is not as stable as others in its class. I know an owner and have sailed on his 35 - he calls it "an active boat" - was very interested in buying one since they are a very good deal - at least here in CA, but the rail was always at the water line and I decided to go with Catalina 36 for a little more money - with two small children and a wife who does not like a "mean lean". They are wonderful coastal racer/cruisers with a great line and we see many at Catalina Island everytime we go.

Thanks for the Feedback

Paul, Trevor and Mark- Thanks for your input. Researching an older boat is a bit of a challenge and this really helps. Laura
