I'm considering purchasing an ericson 29 1978. It has wheel steering, the cockpit is divided by the mainsheet traveler into 2 cockpit sections. The boat has upgraded 2 speed self tailing winches which are a bit forward of the wheel but I believe easy enough to assist singlehandling. Any opinions on this cockpit layout in regards to singlehandling/modifications needed to assist singlehandling or at least handling with "nonsailor" crew? Thanks. Any other comments on a 1978 29 foot ericson. Has roller furling, newish 3 year old universal diesel, seems to be well maintained, running and standing rigging replaced last year. Only weak spot seems to be the lifelines and stantions for lifelines, stantions seem too rusty at bottoms and wobble a bit, single lifeline so that'll need to be upgraged, any idea how extensive/costly that would be? How does this boat sail? 4'4" draft. Thanks in advance. Doug

Ericson 29 a Great boat

I've owned this model boat for 17 years and have just upgraded to a 1989 380-200. The 29 has been an excellent boat. large cockpit is perfect for entertaining. It handles very well in light and heavy weather. The encapsulated lead keel does away with keelbolt problems and the sump keeps the water out of the shallow bilge soyou can store your beer in a cool spot. An older boat such as this needs to have been maintained to be ini good condition. The drains must be leakproof and you should check very carefully for any sign of water around the ports. It's best to determine what is the source of the loose stanchions..make sure it isn't the deck. IF it's just the bracket or post that is loose it's not serious. Good luck

TILLER OR WHEEL ????

I AM BUYING A 1974 ERICSON. THIS IS THE SMALLEST BOAT THAT I HAVE OWNED. IT HAS A TILLER & I'M NOT SURE IF I WANT A TILLER BOAT. HAS ANYONE PUT A WHEEL IN A 29 ? AND IS IT A REAL PROBLEM PUTTING ONE IN. I KNOW THE POST HOUSING HAS TO BE CUT TO PUT THE YOAK ON ALSO RUNNING THE CABLES. IS THIS A PROBLEM TO THINK TWICE ABOUT, AND THE COST FACTOR ?
