I have been using Valvoline All Fleet Plus for Diesel and Heavy Duty Vehicles -SAE 30 API-CF-4, CF-2, CF/SL
oil since day one on my 2003 Yanmar 3GM30F (749 hrs) and my Northern Lights 5KW dielsel generator (2179 hrs). I am going on an extended cruise and am having trouble finding it. What is a replacement and/or compatible oil that is readily available in most marinas?

Any manufacturer that has the same oil designations or newer. API CJ-4 is the newest designation. SAE 30 is the viscosity.

It is a good practice to stay with the same brand

as much as possible but if you are having difficulty finding that particular brand chose another one that is suitable and stay with that one. Actually, making the change is not that critical. The main criteria is to obtain the correct viscosity and that it is rated for use in diesel engines, hence the "C" designation in the API rating which stands for compression fired. It will also clearly state that it is for use in diesel engines. There will also be an "S" indicating spark ignition in the rating indicating that it is also satisfactory in gasoline engines. Diesel crankcase oil is good for both diesel and gasoline engines but oil for gasoline engines only should not be used in diesel engines. The letter after the "C" and "S" indicates the level of the additive package. These have increased over time with later letters superceding earlier ones. "CJ",for instance, is a later and upgraded rating to replace "CF".

For engine longevity change the oil and oil filter regularly.

I have found that Delo (Chevron) is probably the most widely available in the California area, so I do not know about where you are or your destination.

This issue has been posted before and I believe that Shell Rotella was probably a preferred product to Delo (depends on who you talk with).

So I would suggest that you look around and see which one is available and go with that. Just be sure that you get Cx rated oil (compression rated).

Steve, I'd say that the main factor between

choosing between Delo and Rotella is availiability. Seems like Rotella is more common in marine stores and is readily available inland as well. My guess is that of the two Rotella might be a the best choice based on availability. I would also feel comfortable doing a complete oil change switching to another brand in a pinch but sticking to one brand as much as possible.

Eddie: Like I said, it seems that Delo is more common out on the west coast. Even Costco carries Delo. I purchase my Rotella at Napa Auto stores.

Steve, I meant his area and where he might go to. I

don't have a Costco card only because there isn't a Costco anywhere near here. I said, "based on availability" meaning able to be gotten at any particular locality especially near where the boat is or may be. The guy specified "in most marinas".

Delo (Chevron) Rotella T (Shell) and Delvac (Mobil) are all excellent oils and usually can be found in Wal Mart.. There are others but I would not hesitate to use any one of these.. It may be better to pick a readily available one and stick with it, but if ya can't find one and the other is available, it is OK to switch. Rotella is what goes in all my machines, the Yanmar in the boat, the cars, and the lawnmower.

Hey, nothing forcing you to look at it. I find some very interesting info in posts even after the OP has his answer.
