Equalizing Energizer (Johnson Controls) batteries

Reading on the web I've found a couple different pieces of info that conflict. I'm mainly trying to determine when to stop equalizing the batteries.

Is it based on gravity meeting 1265, when it stops raising or just a flat time span?

Out of 4 batteries the ratings were all about 50/50 being either 1265 or 1275. The Xantrex true charge 40 has been holding them at 15.53 volts for the past hour and I'm probably just going to quit after a flat 2 hours then re-check gravity levels and top off with distilled water.

Hopefully I'm doing it right!

Eqalizing

I equalize my group 27 (Johnson Controls) batteries once each season with my Xantrex 20 Charger. I don't check the specific gravity as suggested. I run the equalization for four hours as suggested in the owner's manual and it seems to keep the batteries in good shape. I disconnect all loads from the batteries while equalizing for fear that the high voltages might damage the equipment on my boat. Ever since I have begun this equalization, my batteries (now 5 years old) seem to hold a charge better and use almost no water throughout the season. They do drop to about 70% or more of full charge when used out at anchor for 24 hours with refrigeration, electronics, etc. but come right back with the engine alternator and when back on the Xantrex at the dock. They require almost no charge after sitting for several months in my garage during the winter.
