Quick question, what would you smear on a bolt to prevent epoxy from making the bolt a permanent fixture in the layup? Vaseline? The bolt is just a clamping mechanism while the epoxy cures.

Many things work: Vasoline, wax, grease, commercial parting agents, etc. The idea is to fill in the grain (yes metal has a grain) and any imperfections that allow the epoxy to grip the fastener as well as eliminate the chemical bond.

I have wrapped the thread with Teflon tape with good results.

I would not use anything... just monitor it and remove the bolt a hour or two after the epoxy sets up..... epoxy doesnt really begin to form its strong bond until several hours after it sets up.....
so after the epoxy gets set to the point where it will hold itself together, remove the nut and spin the bolt out of the hole......

but if you are worried, use candle wax and rub it on the bolt, because anything else can get messy and may become trapped in a "pocket"....
if it is a deep hole, and you are using 1/4" bolts, you can sleeve the hole with a piece of a large drinking straw, then the bolt will slip out and the piece of straw can be pulled.....

I have used car wax before and failed miserably... so not everything works.
Best thing I have used on bolts is Zipper wax, it comes in a tube that looks like a big chapstick or a glue stick and you can usually find it at Wal-Mart or Craft Stores. Only a light coating is needed. Beeswax works well too.
Generally I'd say anything that is more of 'sticky' type wax. I think the car wax I used was just too thin, had I tried a thick carnuba paste wax it would have been fine. Rule of thumb, if its solid at room temperature its a good wax to use for a release agent.
I wouldn't recommend any type of petroleum based grease or even synthetic for that matter, post clean up and residue could be problematic.
