We have a Hunter 34 (1986) and would like to add a US flag to the stern. But we don't know what kind of mount to use. When we look at other boats, the mount is attached right to the stern but it doesn't seem like it would work with a Hunter 34 without running into the railing.

We looked at rail mounts. Does the rail need to be disassembled to attach them? The expensive ones say that the rail doesn't have to be disassembled to attach. Does that mean the others require disassembly of the rail to attach the mount?

What do other Hunter owners use?

We just put a small flag halyard block on the backstay anout 8+/- Ft above the deck and run a small flag halyard between that and the pushpit rail. Our's has a slpit backstay, so I use the starboard side stay & rail. It works fine and didn't cost much.

West Marine P# 2546141 $22 will work. It is made for a SS or Alum pole. It will clamp to an existing rail without any problems.

Remember the rule of thumb for your ensign... one inch of flag length to one foot of boat length.

Flag on H34 Backstay

I put a small block on the cotterpin loop with a piece of seizing wire up on one of the bottom holes of the triangular piece where the backstay splits. I threaded the flag halyard through the block and then down through the barrel of the turnbuckle. After putting on a couple of brass flag clips I tied the two ends of the halyard together so it makes a continuous loop. I can clip the flag on and just advance the loop up. Works smooth.

We now have a bimini and it still feeds up through the pass through hole easily.

Also when I had the backstay disconnected from the top of the triangular piece I threaded it through my radar reflector. I saw lots of them done this way when I was visiting in Florida. That's a good idea. Don't see that hardly at all here on the left coast.

I have the same...

Ensign mount on my H34 as pictured in Niel D's post, but on the starboard side.

I have a teak pole and drilled a hole through the mount and pole base and insert a ringed rigging pin in it to keep from loosing the pole overboard by accident.
