Has anyone with a sailboat spent much time sailing in the Ca. Delta? I used to go water sking there, but didn't pay attention to the sailboats.I know there's miles of waterway, but are there things to see, enough wind to sail our is it mostly motoring.I remember mostly levees, that we couldn't see over most of the time.I think you can sail from San Francisco to Sacramento. What about anchoring. Can you find spots that are away from powerboats wakes to spend an evening?I have a 21ft. sailboat and have been thinking about the delta, for a week of sailing.I now live in Oregon, and would hate to tow for 9 hrs.get there and be disappointed.Anyone with information please reply. Thanks

Best anchoring in the world

Jim: You aren't going to find much better places to anchor than in the Delta. Depending on the time of the year that you would make the trip you may find that it is a little HOT (112 this year). Depending on when you go and where you go you can have many different types of wind and warmth. I have been in the Delta for about 25-30 years. We where originally in the Stockton area. We are now in the Rio Vista area (triangle between Stockton, Sacramento and the bay). It is about 60+ miles from our location to the SF bay. Benecia is about 30-35 miles. Great place to spend some time.

Beware

Years ago when I was working for the Stockton Record, we'd have at least one story a year about someone who got lost in the Delta because the channels all look the same. It's quite a maze, so take charts and a GPS.

Delta

Steve,I stayed in Rio Vista 2yrs. ago ,at my girlfriends sisters place. She's now moved to Lodi.It seems like there's always a good breeze blowing. We walked down by the marine and yacht club.Pretty small town. What about bridge clearances in the delta. Are there certain routes that you need to take.We use to put my ski boat in at Bethel Island.I glued a map of the delta in my boat, since it's so easy to get lost. Some of the sloughs were dead ends. Its been 25yrs.since I've been there. When I was a kid, my dad would take me stripper fishing(boy there were some big fish) I'm hoping maybe next summer.Happy sailing Steve.

You can put in at several different places.

Jim: You can put in at several different places (Hog Back, Bethel Island State Park or Rio Vista). Most of the Bridges are opened by calling on Ch. 9. During the summer months they are manned day and nite, in the spring they have different operating hours. If you are north of the Rio Vista Bridge there are only a couple of bridges to worry about depending on your course. When are you planning this trip and for how long?

Swimming

It has been awhile since I sailed there, but unless it has changed, the water is rather dirty for swimming -- and since it is hot, you really want to dive in. It is an interesting place, however.

sailing

Steve.Just got back from a wedding in Lodi.Don't know when I'll be able to take a vacation.Work's real iffy. We're right in the middle of the state at 3600ft.A dry climate. You probably get more rain than us,but we do get snow every year.I moved here in 1978 and sometimes wonder if I should move back to Ca.because of the work that's available there.I guess time well tell.P.S. I couldn't believe how warm it was at 10 in the evening down there. Here we're at 28-30 degrees at night already.Frost on the decks and lawns and scraping car windows.High desert.
