I'm spending a few days in New Bern NC. It seems like a wonderful place for sailing. Nice resturants too. We ate at the Chelsea and were impressed(someone here recommended). I think we will look around Fairfield harbor tomorrow. What don' t we want to miss? Any second hand sailboat shops?

Glad you're enjoying that little slice of heaven, Marc! We've lived in the area since '96 and hope to never leave! There's another restaurant downtown called Craven 247...great for lunch. Hurricane Jack's is a boating consignment shop across the Rte. 17 bridge in the town of Bridgeton, run by some great people. Check it out if you get a chance...it is just a slight detour off your path to Fairfield Harbor. Enjoy!

Fairfield Harbor was nice when we looked to relocate in 1990 with homes on canals but she wanted the mountains of NC which was very beautiful but I wanted water in New Bern,we are living in SW Florida now and very nice also.

Not sure if you're sailing or not ...so here's a few additional ideas for land and water:

The NC Maritime Museum (315 Front Street, Beaufort) is great. Just down the street is Clawson's Restaurant; it's been there forever, family operated and great food (the deserts are all home-made).

If you are sailing, a quick sail to the inside hook at Cape Lookout is great, stayed there on the hook several years ago (until the ice ran out). Perfect spot, on the hook in a small cove while being able to see the beakers just beyond the dunes. We used the "outside passage"; there is (or was) an "inside passage" too but had shoaling issues.

Early in the morning, you may spot a few "Outer Bank" ponies as they forage on the point, just across the town's mooring field.

As a resident of New Bern, welcome! In Bridgeton, across the Neuse, is a marine consignment shop, and there is one in Oriental, as well. There is a branch of the ALmnd Tree Cafe at the historical center as well as on Trent Road. Half Time is a great sports bar off the main drag. We're summeering in CT, or we would be delighted to show you around. Our marina is Northwest Creek Marina in Fairfield Harbour, which is where we make out year-round home. Glad you're enjoying out town!

Marc,
Again welcome to New Bern, our boat is a 40.5, Wind Dreamer currently at the Hilton on D dock slip 27 we will be down this weekend, if you are still there feel free to stop by and have a cold one. New Bern reminds me of a little Annapolis about 40 years ago, I keep my boat at North West Creek Marina in Fairfield (for the past 18 yrs) and we decided to rent a slip at the Hilton for the month of July, have really enjoyed the convience of walking into town for just about anything but groceries, as you have already discovered for a small town (we live in Raleigh) it has an abdunance of very good resturants, I would also suggest; Morgans, Persimmons (on the water) Capt. Rattys, and MJ's and try the Pollock St. Deli or Bakers Square for breakfast.
Day trips by car (or overnight by boat) check out Oriental on the ICW & Neuse River, Beaufort and Cape Lookout as previously mentioned.
Enjoy you stay,
Capt. Ron

Thanks for the replies. We had french toast(homemade bread) at Bakers Square. Stromboli at the Big Apple outside of Fairfield and looked at homes around Fairfield Harbor. We found some we liked but most lots are so small. They seem priced well. Tomorrow we will poke around some more and head out on Thursday. Thanks for the invite Ron, we are at the Hilton but won't be here for the weekend but would have gladly talked to you about the waterways.
