What you can do is get three strong wood poles and set them up like a trypod using rope. Rope it off over the engine and tie it off to the boat so that it can't move. Then use a block and tackle at the apex with a couple of slings to raise the engine out. You may need to set the engine down and move the Gin Pole in order to get the engine where you want it.

You could also probably get away with just two long shear legs tied together and roped in place at the bottom. The top can be roped to the bow and the stern. An extra set of blocks can be placed at the bow so that the sheer legs can pivot aft in the same fashion as a derick. They use this setup to pull a keel stepped mast on a Catalina 27. I don't see why it wouldn't work on an inboard engine.

Often on the top of most engines there is a lifting ring where you can attach a chain with an anchor shackle and that can be attached to a hoist as mentioned above, or on overhead in a marina where they might have an a-frame, or perhaps a truck crane to lift it out. You might have to remove some of the attached engine parts for clearance such as the alternator, starter, etc.

thank you so much for the information guys, the problem is the oday 37 is a centre cockpit with just a small hole for removal into the aft cabin. Im not sure how to physicially move it & remove it out through the hole. It looks like i may have to remove as many parts of the engine as possible then turn it on its side to squeeze through a small opening. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas??? many thanks again...Julian

37 cc engine removal

I have a 32 cc. I have not had to remove engine but I am very familiar with boat. I believe the engine will fit out engine room door from aft cabin. I would get some ply wood and make ramp. I would open lazarate seats on both sides and use this access as a way to lift. You could use your halyards. I was looking for the engine weight but can't find it . Oday's like these are usually designed well and had maintance in mind.

It will not fit out the lazarettes - go out the aft cabin, its not as bad as it seems - We just replaced our westerbeke 30 in october - same boat, with a beta 30 - here's the short version of what worked in the end-
-remove wet exhaust, control cables, wiring
-remove all of the trim on the access panel from the aft berth.
-remove the pedestal and steering cabling
-remove the starter, the raw water pump, and alternator (for space and weight)
-disconnect the shaft and remove the tranny
-get a 3/4"x2'x4' piece of plywood and place as a "ramp" to exit through the aft access panel
-get several 2x4x2 boards to use as levers/spacers for the rest of the procedure - helpful in lifting and holding things in place as you go
-put a 4x4x6 across the cockpit (setting on each side) and put a small chainfall on it to lift the engine through the pedestal hole
-put a nylon strap around the crank pully in the front and around the bell housing aft to lift with the chainfall- as you lift it off the mounts rotate the engine to port onto its side, sliding the plywood ramp under as you go (do yourself a favor and get a 2' lever/crow bar to help with maneuvering it)
-once on its side you can muscle-hump it up the "ramp", or better yet put a 2x4 in in the access panel under the aft berth and use a come-along to help pull it out.
-once 75% clear you can rig the nylon straps well enough to lift and clear the aft door and hatch via crane (or boom-rigged lift)

That 'lifting bracket' may actually be for attaching the alternator to the engine, not for lifting the weight of the engine. You risk possibly compromising the head of your engine if you do this.
Just sayin'.

ccarmody, how much trouble did was it to remove the tranny? I have a 32 with a Westerbeke 30 and a Paragon SOA and that tranny is not moving, I bought another on Ebay and the guy shipped it with the bell housing....probably because he couldn't remove it.
nice pics of the engine removal...I was going to chime in and suggest out the aft cabin too

Thanks RAD, it was educational to say the least... But wow do we like that new engine.
There were 4 bolts holding a steel plate the tranny was mounted on to the flywheel housing (see photo) - much PB blaster later we were able to remove them w/ an impact driver. After that, the yellow pry bar pictured was successful as a lever between the mounting plate and the housing to gradually pull the input shaft from the flywheel (prying gradually rotating around the housing, PB blaster and a few choice words later).

On the note about the alternator bracket - that pic is a little deceiving as there is a red nylon strap that goes down to the crankshaft and a few other hardpoints - wouldn't want to destroy a perfectly good balmar-
