I am new to sailing and am currently refurbishing an early 80's Catalina 22'. I have read that an engine 10hp or less is sufficient. How about engine weight? I have found weights from 60-110 lbs. Thanks

On my 1980 C22, I use a 7.5 HP long shaft Evinrude. Weight is 59 pounds & lots of power for a C22. I made a modification for a vertical pull start. I also have an extension for the gear shifter lever. A newer 4 stroke would be great! Regards, Bob B.

I also have a c-22 and am using an old ted williams 5 and a half that moves us along against three foot waves without a problem.I don't think you would need more than that.

Nissan 5 HP 2 stroke
Hello, I have a 5 HP Nissan 2 stroke that works great. It weighs 40 lbs and has plenty of power. I rarely use more than 1/2 throttle, and that is enough to move the boat at 5 kts. If you are looking for a motor, make sure you get a long shaft. Even with a long shaft and the motor mount as low as it will go it is possible for the prop to cavitate in steep swells. If I were going to buy a new motor I would get a 4 stroke because they are quieter, more fuel efficient, and pollute less. Good luck, Barry

Bob, I have an 84' Evinrude 8HP. It's more than I need and a bit heavier than I want. If I had to replace it, I would probably struggle with the decision between the Nissan/Tohatsu four-stroke 6HP or the Mercury two-stroke 5HP. Both are very lightweight for their class. By the way, can you please post a picture of your gearshift extension? I've been thinking of doing that myself and would like to see your implementation. Thanks, Dave

Shifter Extension
Hello Dave: My motor is mounted on the port side so I had to reach over the motor & way down to reach the gear shifter. When motoring into my small slip at the marina, often singlehanded, I am crouched up on the seat so that I can see forward. Reaching for the tiller was OK but needed longer arms to reach the gear shifter & usually this is at a critical time. The extension is a piece of 1/8" X 1-1/4" flat bar. I narrowed & curved the bottom end for a good fit into the depression in the existing lever so the extension cannot pivot on the new bolt. I could post a picture of the bottom end. Put a bit of cord on the handle end just for looks. Regards, Bob B.

Thanks for the pic Bob! My motor looks very similar to yours. I just may "steal" your design and make one for myself. I have the same problem having to reach for the shift lever when manuevering through the marina. Just yesterday there was a lot of activity in the marina and I had to start and stop a number of times.
