I have a 1979 Venture 25 with a currently unreliable old Johnson 9.9 2 cycle outboard. I have planned on replacing this engine with a Tohatsu electric start 25 inch shaft engine. The Tohatsu weighs in at 92 lbs. I have an opportunity to get a Honda 8 hp 25 inch shaft but the weight is 117 lbs. How can I determine if my motor bracket and transom can handle the weight. Thanks in advance for the help =)

Carolyn, cant answer your question.. but Ive also noticed that the outboard brackets for the same HP four stroke is generally beefier than for two stroke. Seems the outboard weiight has some influence on this but not entirely. It would seem that for some reason the engine just being four stroke requires a stronger bracket.. Something to do with torque?? or ??

In some of the specs that I can find.....

............they say up to 10 HP, but don't give a weight.

My concern might be how would the weight difference effect me, not the boat. Do you remove the motor when you trailer to increase tongue weight? A 90+ lb. motor can be a handful depending on what shape you are in and the 117 lb. would be something I wouldn't want to have to lift on and off the boat.

I've added a hoisting system to help me. If I was 20 years younger I would not be using this, but I'm not so the weight deal becomes a bigger issue. I've put my 90 lb. Honda on the boat before the lift, but I just had my second hernia operation and I'd prefer not having any more. The 90 lb. at ground level is one thing, but getting it up on the boat while it is on the trailer is another.

Good luck,

Sum

I'd also look at the backing for the engine bracket. the transom is pretty thin... you'll probably need to increase the size of the backing plate, maybe run it full width...

trailering will be the worst, with all the bouncing its like a lever on that backing plate.

you might be able to get away with the stock bracket if you never towed w. the engine on.

-can you stand on the current engine bracket? how does it feel.

I haven't tried standing on the motor mount yet but if it quits being soooo cold and wet tomorrow I am going to try that. I have plans to beef up the plate later this winter before the boat goes back in the water. Thanks for the help

Just a thought, have you considered a 6 hp Tohatsu? I have yet to need more than 1/4 throttle to maintain hull speed on my 22-2, only weighs 60lbs, so it's a lot easier to handle and you will be less inclined to attempt to to tow with it hanging off the back end. The transom is really too thin for that without serious reinforcement, and the stock mount should handle it without a problem.

My 2 Cents

In my opinion the two most important things you have mentioned are the 25" shaft and electric starting. I don't think any of these engines will rip your transom off. But it is a good idea to beef it up.

Carolyn,
There's a brand new Garelick motor bracket made for 4 stokes from 7 to 30 HP with a 9 inch travel and will handle up to 169 lbs for a buy it now price of $287 on eBay. This is a steal. Just type in outboard motor bracket. I tried to send you a PM about the very heavy yamaha 9.9 4 stroke I had mounted as an auxillary on my 22 ft. proline next to my 150. I always trailered it on the bracket in the raised position. NEVER any problem! I did have it cable locked to the bracket so nobody would steal it. You just don't want to have to unload a hundred pound motor from your trunk or truck, lift it up and mount it to a bracket each time you go sailing, not to mention hooking it to a battery if it's an electric start.
