1981 Volvo MD11C. Can not get more than 1700 Rpm's. At 1700 RPM's it is blowing oil out exhaust and smoking badly. I would assume it is rings. If so, can repairs be made without removing the engine. Also, when idling, there is more than normal vibration of engine. Have owned boat for 4 years. Problem just started.

Don't think you can

I don't think there is anything you can do below the head, without pulling the engine. At least not in any installation I have seen. It is necessary to pull the pan for much else, and don't think you can do that with the engine still mounted in the boat. From your description I would suspect that something has broken in one of the cylinders, that allows oil to bypass and also lose compression. You probably have no or very little compression in that cylinder, and it's not firing, which accounts for the vibration. So look for things like a cracked head, broken piston crown, broken rings etc.

Find a GOOD mechanic

Start out with the simple stuff and go from there. (Filters; fuel; fuel pump) However... blowing oil is not a good sign. Find a good mechanic and do a compression test. I feel your pain.

P323 engine

This guy knows all about the MD11C Vosbury Marine 1656 Homewood Landing Rd. Annapolis, MD 410-757-3844 410-757-0935 fax vosburym@aol.com I did a rebuild in 1996 also reference http://www.pearson323.net/documents/volvo_penta_md11-17.pdf BTW the best way to pull the engine is to cut the fibreglass between the two engine hatches, Cut the wire harness, undo the prop, undo the engin mounts and slide the engine with the mounts still attached. nice lifting hook on top of engine and hoist away. Best to put on a pallett

Can Rebuild in place!!!!

One of the advantages of the MD11C is that it has removable cyclinders as opposed to a cast engine block. Supposedly you can take off the head and then remove the cyclinders and expose the main crankshaft etc all in place. You don't have to cut any fiberglass to remove the engine. I saw a 323 with that operation and it looked bad. My engine was replaced without any fiberglass surgery. With access to the engine so limited I doubt that I'd try to rebuild in place!!!! But again supposedly it is possible. Go to pearson323.net they have a shop manual on-line and other information.
