Hello,
I am currently on the Dismal Swamp Canal my situation is dismal. I stopped to examine the damage my anxious departure from the South Mills locks caused, and upon setting out again my engine sputtered and would barely make headway. I managed to get back to the DSCW information center mooring so I could find the problem.
My first thought was fuel starvation, but I had just put five gallons in the tank the previous afternoon. Still, I might have a massive leak. Second thought was clogged filters, and from accessing the forum via wifi, maybe clogged fuel pickup. Water in the fuel also a possible culprit.
I was quite surprised to see an engine mount nut and washer underneath the engine. I guess that racket at engaging the gear wasn't cavitation after all.
I checked the filters, and they seemed OK. No water in the separator, and free flow from the tank.
I have tightened the mounts as much as I am able and after checking system for tightness will attempt starting and continuing the journey tomorrow.
