I'm co-captain of a '81 33 and the engine throttle is what I call a "dead-man" type meaning it always goes back to idle. This drives us crazy on any long distance or when the helmsman needs both hands. Any ideas on a retro-fit so it can be set anywhere in between? We'd like to be able to find a comfortable rpm and then leave it there when powering. Thanks for any help/ideas.

Get one of these....

Order a Teleflex/Morse part# 044386 it's called a cable brake. Nothing more than a fancy clamp to put resistance in the cable. Should be able to get one at West, might eve be in stock.

elastic cord throttle fixer

my 79 H33 has the same problem and so I just use a loop of elastic cord dead ended on the pedestal to keep the rpm from drifting down. Works perfect.

Engine throttel

I "created" this problem on my Hunter 28.5 by accidently spraying lube on the throttle cable whilst oiling the chain on my wheel steering. Anyway, the fix is easy and cheap. Go to a hardware store and buy a simple wire cable clamp. Tighten it around the throttle cable until you get the right tension. No need to buy -- or pay for -- "marine grade" anything. If this galvanized clamp begins to rust, I'll just spend another quarter and replace it with another one....

Same boat, same year, same problem

The previous owner removed the "cable brake" because he couldn't get it adjusted right. Mine currently has a bungee cord to hold the throttle where I want it. I will assume you have the Edson pedestal as mine does. If you look in their catalog, or online under Dual-Lever Engine Controls you'll find them. The "Size 45" version has a "Throttle Friction Adjuster" in the control head. I've disassembled mine, it doesn't have one. I've been pondering drilling, tapping, and installing my own "Throttle Friction Adjuster", just a screw pressing down on a nylon (I think) spacer pressing on the throttle lever shaft. If you're ambitious enough to try it, let me know how it comes out.

I did Warren's fix w/the cable clamp

since West Marine didn't have the "correct" part in stock. I plan to move the clamp each year to spred out the wear area on the throttle cable and housing. Before that we just used a thick rubber band looped forward around some knob on the pedistal. Scott

It's nothing more than a C-Clamp

which clamps onto the throttle cable. The part is inexpensive (for a boat!) and easy to install. Although it's a little blurry you can see it the foreground of the attached picture.

A wedge

We use a small rubber wedge covered with tape to jam the throtle lever in the desired position. I has a string tied to it and it velcros in the pedestal when not in use. works fine and is a good conversation piece.
