I am wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how the engine controls of the pedestal should be setup.
The way mine seem to be, is I don't have a separate kill switch for the engine, and instead have to decrease my throttle all the way back until the engine cuts.

It makes it tricky when docking as there is always a risk of stalling the engine when trying to bring my boat in slow, especially when the wind picks up, something goes wrong and I have to do a quick maneuver.

I have a yanmar 2qm20 engine, and im wondering if I can I alter my setup so pulling my throttle back stops at a comfortable pre-determined idle speed, and wire up a separate kill switch? Does Edson sell something to limit the levers throw or is this a part I would get from Yanmar.

Re: Engine throttle control setup on my pedestal advice need

you kill the engine by pulling out the fuel shutoff when you're done. usually it's a black knob that pulls out perpendicular to its mounting surface. you could probably trace the cable from the engine out to the fitting. there should be (must be?) a fuel shutoff somewhere, but it's not always right at the wheel. mine is under the helmsman seat, for example.

you're right in thinking that you want your throttle set so the engine keeps idling even with the throttle pulled back, and you don't necessarily want it to cut out at minimum throttle.

Re: Engine throttle control setup on my pedestal advice need

I have a 3qm30H (same engine three cylinders) and the previous owner deleted the fuel shut of cable and set it up as you describe so that I have to bring the throttle all the way back to shut it off and at times while docking I have accidentally shut off the engine.

I recently adjusted the idle adjuster / fuel shut off mechanism so that the throttle hits the idle adjuster before the engine shuts off. now I have to make an extra pull back after hitting idle to shut it off and it seems to be working well like that. no more accidental shut offs.

also I tried to order parts for the idle adjuster/fuel shut off to renew it and most of them have been discontinued at yanmar.

if you want to do it this way and still have trouble figuring it out feel free to contact me
directly.

the thottle and idle adjust mechanism are on the starboard side of the engine and
that is what controls the engine speed when the throttle is all the way back.

have a friend move the throttle up and back while you watch what happens at the engine, just by observing you may be able to figure out how to adjust it.

the maintenance manual also has a section on this mechanism with clear drawings
that may be able to help.

in my opinion having a separate fuel shut off cable is the best, that is how every boat I have ever been on is set up, but for now, this will do. the to do list has too many other things on it.
