I am interested in buying a new 361, but am concerned that the standard 27 hp engine will be sufficient power where I sail (Lake Tahoe 6,200 ft elevation). Engines tend to lose about 20% of their power at this elevation. Does your 361 achieve hull speed easily with reserve power? Has anyone purchased a 361 with a larger engine, say 35 hp?

Choose the right prop

I sail at sea level and have no problem with engine power. You should consider an autoprop if you are concerned about power. A 3 bladed feathering autoprop is said to be extremely efficient. Practical Sailor had an article on this a couple of years ago. I find that I can cruise at 6.5 - 7 knots at 2300 rpm

Engine brand?

Gary, is your engine a Volvo PENTA 2030?. I bought my 361 in France and it came with the Volvo. I do get 7 knots but only at 2800 RPM while the max RPM that I can get is 3300 RPM. If not, could it be the prop?
