Catalina 22 San Diego
I just recently purchased a 1982 Catalina 22, included in the sale is a 50th Anniversary edition 4hp direct drive Johnson Envinrude Seahorse. I took it off to have it maintenance. I've been told that this engine is for maneuvering only and will burn up if used for anything other. What size engine do some of you have and recommend. I live in san diego and I want a motor that can put around for those times we want to do a night cruise in the bay when there is no wind and the sails are down.

Please give me suggestions and recommendations on horse power

Rubbish. Who told you that nonsesne?

C22s have used from two to 9.9 hp engines. We had a 7.5 Mercury on our 1981 on SF Bay, worked fine. For your location 4 would do just fine. Check with the C22 Association, too.

I have a 2008 Merc 4 cycle 4 hp on my Capri 22. It works fine.

I have a 2009 Tohatsu 5hp. It pushes the C22 at 5 knots with 1/4 to 1/3 throttle, with no wind or waves. It's not uncommon to run it for 1 to 2 hours when the wind dies in the evening while returning to the dock. Assuming your OB is in good condition, it should be more than adequate.

I'd probably keep what you have if it is in good condition. Like others, I cannot imagine that a Johnson Evinrude motor would not run all day. Keeping in mind that I sail on lakes (way smaller waves), 4hp has been enough on 22' boats to heave too safely under power against thunderstorm microbursts. If I were buying a motor for my Catalina 22, it would probably be a 6HP Tohatsu - the extra long shaft version with the special prop for sailboats, if I had a good 4hp already, I'd keep it.

Use a GPS or knot log and test the motor - if 2/3 power will maintain hull speed (5.9 kts), then that would be another argument for keeping it.

Your engine is not only adequate, it is close to bulletproof. I've used everything from 2.5 to 9.5 on my C22 and the 4.5 Evinrude came out the winner, doesn't burn much fuel either. And yes, it will run all day if you just want to tool around inlets and harbors.

I have a 2001 nissan 5hp 4 stroke that has always seemed to be enough for me (sailing in Great South bay NY). But after reading these other posts, I usually cant get the boat over 4.2 knts on my knot meter at about 3/4+ throttle? Its a long shaft. I am using the three blade prop that came with the motor. Should I be using a different prop for more power?
