engine shifter problem

I have the standard Teleflex single lever shifter. Last week, all of a sudden, shifting out of neutral-to forward or reverse--has become quite difficult, needs a lot of strength to move it. I sprayed WD40 on the mechanism accessed thru the cockpit seat hatch--no improvement. Unlikely to be a kink in the Morse cable, because nothing was done to affect it. Once engaged in gear, throttle moves normally. Also, in neutral, no problem with throttle control. Any ideas out there?

Check the transmission end of the cable and related linkage. Make sure your shift point positions are being met by the cable adjustment. If you take the cable loose, you can move the transmission shift arm and confirm the positions, then make sure the shift cable is properly set.
You may also have something binding the transmission end of things. I found a battery cover and fuel line binding the shift linkage. You have confirmed your separate throttle cable is working.

The cables themselves are prone to corrosion and broken strands. They get very difficult to impossible to move when that happens. The only fix is to replace them.

I had exactly the same problem. If you remove the cable ends from the shift lever on the trans. and from the teleflex control you should be able to move the cable with two fingers with very little resistance. If not you should replace the cable. I ordered mine directly from Beneteau in Marion, NC. Not expensive at all. It is made by Glendinning Controls. Now I just hope I can install the new one without any big issues,

How was it replacing the cable? Any advice? Also I’m trying to figure out which cable to purchase. I have a 2007 Bene 373 with the 40 hp yanmar.
