just finishing up the refit on my od25 and was wondring what to do with the cavornous area under the cockpit, where the inboard used to be. I was thinking maybe a generator. I would like to be self contained and charge batteries, run lights, tv, stereo, fans while out to sea/anchored. I worry about going to sleep and never waiking up from carbon monoxide, or fires. Do you vent the exhaust to the outside? is it too much hassle for inboard install? Just looking for something to fill that big empty space that will actually get used, and not just "down there" and forgotten? thanks for the help

What are you now using for an auxilary? Outboard on a bracket? Frank

Would you even consider running a generator in

your livingroom at home? Of course you vent the exhaust to the outside. If you have to ask "is it too much of a hassle to install an inboard engine?" then it probably is for you. But an experienced machinery installer would just figure out all of the pieces needed and get started. Lyn and Larry Pardey lived aboard an engineless non-electric 29 foot boot for many years. Lyn had a bath tub in the space for the engine.

A big beer cooler!

How are you charging your batteries now? Assuming your outboard has a generator it is not going to be making much juice but on a 25' boat that may be ok too.

follow up

i am using an 8hp high thrust yamaha 4 stroke on a bracket. The "hassle" is just an excuse.I cerrtainly have the skills to do just about anything boat related. just not sure it is proper? I could build transom bracket and mount it outboard? i would prefer solar buy they are much money, then again so is gen.

How do you use the boat

You indicated out at sea/anchored. That could be days or just a weekend. If it is days then you need to design a system (loads-storage-production) that fits your needs. If you are just doing weekend trips then an AC charger and a bigger battery bank is surely the way to go. Don't discount the happiness that a full load of beer can produce. I can get by without a lot of the necessities provided I have a few of life's little luxuries.

How about a big bunk under the cockpit like the

newer boats have. I had a Catalina 27 with that cavern under the cockpit, and I thought it would be a great conversion.

You are not quite right about solar being $$$

We use the Sunsei 6W solar panel to charge our batteries, one at a time. http://www.solarcharger.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.62/.f $90. + the mounting kit for attaching to the stern rail: Sunsei Solar Grip http://www.solarcharger.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.63/.f $50. + appropriate marine wire and crimps $$$ + controller $40 Total cost for parts about $200 and it keeps one battery charged nicely up here in NY. It would probably work really well down in sunny Floriday. You forgot to mention if the boat has a 12v VHF or GPS or refrigerator or chartplotter much less how many 12v batteries you carry (I can only assume you have 1). If you really have to watch tv why (while underway?) not pay the money for a slip with shore power and bring a 110v portable along to annoy your neighbors with. Get a car stereo you like and hook it up to your battery(s) if you really want to piss people off. Seriously though, the space you are talking about is a decent spot for putting heavier stowage items like a cooler full of ice and the beverage of your choice and will add a little artificial mast rake ... the cabin sole (floor) is a little better for an even distribution of weight but weight in the stern will keep the bow up unless it is blowing stink and then you will have to sail downwind only. Go solar and good luck.

A nice battery bank

would fit along with a charger, maybe even a pressurized water system for showers and a sink. Think comfort. Refer set up along with a hot water heater. Propane locker for the stove and or cabin heater. There are many possibilities. How big is your wallet? Keep it up, Ctskip

You took out a diesel powered generator.

The installation of an air cooled generator inside the cabin would not be practical from a safety standpoint. A marine diesel water cooled generator would run you big bucks. The space would work as a storage space for a portable generator to be operated on deck. Think also about refrigeration.
